Hello my lovely Fashionistas!
Why on earth didn’t anybody think of this before? Coloured drops to add to your foundation to make it lighter or darker: GENIUS!
Like most/some of you, I have a drawer full of foundations. Some are the right consistency and not quite the right colour. Some are for my paler Winter skin and some are darker to keep up with my tan in Summer. But when I read about The Body Shop Shade Adjusting Drops, I thought this might actually be a way to reduce the number of bottles, tubes and jars of foundations and I took myself off to a store to put it to the test.
Here is what it says on The Body Shops Website:
You wouldn’t settle for Mr. “Almost Right” so why do it with your foundation? Our Shade Adjusting Drops help turn an almost there shade into the perfect one.
The girls were lovely at my local The Body Shop Store and were happy to give me a small sample each of the Darkening and Lightening Drops to test with my own foundation. They did explain to me, that they work best with their own liquid foundation to get the right effect, but I decided to try it anyway.
The foundation I decided to I try the drops with, is the Kat Von D Lock-itTattoo Foundation in Medium 54 Great coverage, but not quite the right colour. I felt the opacity of this foundation would make the colour show up nicely.
So here are 3 drops of the foundation, with no addition:

The first one I added was the Lightening Drops. Here is what it says on the website:
LIGHTENING DROPS
If you have light to medium skin you may find your foundation looks too dark or orange. A concentration of white and pink pigments in our Lightening Drops helps neutralise yellowness while lightening. Simply add a drop to lighten light to medium shades.
- For use with light to medium foundation shades
- Transform an “almost right” foundation shade into the perfect one
- Also available in a darkening tone
- 1 drop = ½ a shade lighter
- Works with most liquid foundations
- Concentrated in white and pink pigments to lighten and neutralise yellowness.
- Designed for very light to medium skin tones who cannot find a shade light enough, or who are in between shades.
The Darkening Drops I added to the middle drop of foundation:
DARKENING DROPS
If you have dark to deep skin you may find your foundation looks too light or ashy. A concentration of black and red pigments in our Darkening Drops helps darken while keeping the natural depth. Simply add a drop to darken dark to deep foundation shades.
- For use with dark to deep foundation tones
- Transform an “almost right” foundation shade into the perfect one
- Also available in a lightening tone
- 1 drop = ½ a shade lighter
- Works with most liquid foundations
And this is the finished result:
I added the same amount of each colour to the foundation. As you can see the darker drops seem to be a lot stronger than the whitening drops. I would probably need to add another drop to get the full effect. What it has done is to neutralise the colour, to make it less golden.

You can see when they are swatched on my skin how the drops have changed the colour. Both have the ability to neutralise the colour, in this case the whitening drops have taken out some of the yellow and it nearly blends in with my natural skin colour. The darkening drops have definitely made it a shade darker, but in an ashy shade with no yellow at all. The bottom is straight up Kat von D in Medium 54.
Conclusion:
This stuff works. Admittedly, I need more than the recommended 1 drop to add to my foundation to make it half a shade lighter.
Would I buy it?
YES. Absolutely. The perfect solution to mix and match to the right colour. Especially, if you, like me, fluctuate in colours LOTS.
You can purchase The Body Shop Shade Adjusting Drops in stores Australia Wide or online HERE for AU$29.95 each. If you have a foundation you want to colour adjust, I recommend you take your foundation in to the store and have a go at mixing.
Good luck!

i know right? Why didn’t anybody think of this earlier? x
Excellent concept! I am forever getting stuff too light because I’m scared to go too dark – this would be the perfect neutraliser.

maybe ask for a sample or take your foundation with you at The Bodyshop, Beth. Apparently it works better with some foundations but not others. x

Oh yes, I so need some of this! Last count was 12 bottles of foundation on my bench – half of them are ok but the others could do with some adjustment. Thanks hon – awesome post! ♥♥♥
