The Return of the Brown Lipstick

I feel like the above title needs many many exclamation marks. Because I am excited!  I have worn my share of the brown lip over the decades and I really love that look.

Brown Lipstick  is an iconic look of the 90s. Think about the supermodels of that era. Every single one of them wears BROWN lipstick.

How about FRIENDS and Rachel with THAT hair and,  of course Brown Lipstick!

I have to admit. The 90’s are a bit of a blur. 1992, 1994, 1998 were the years I had my children, and not a lot of Fashionista’ing was done in that decade. I did find some photos from our wild Playgroup nights out where I was wearing: yup. Brown lipstick.

The era of the supermodels.

Have a look at these beauties. See anything jumping out at you? Yep. Brown lippy.

And then. Nek minit.

I see this GORGEOUS photo of Kim Kardashian at the Givenchy Fashion Show, wearing a bun, faultless make up with Brown/mauve lipstick, stunning black lace and matching North on her lap.

Love or loath Kim, she looks flawless here.

So at the recent IMATS  I purchased a Lime Crime Velveteen Lipgloss in the colour Salem – a gorgeous, 90s grungey, matte brown.

In a wave of madness, last night at 11pm, I decided to create a make up look inspired by Kimmie, and take photos with my new Ring Flash light.

yup. Totally nuts. But fun.

And in True Kimmy Fashion, I started with contouring.  For this I used ELF Yellow Corrector, and Hourglass Illume Creme-to-Powder Bronze Duo. I have quite a “flat” face, and contouring is a necessity for my face. (that is Kim on the right, just in case you were wondering!)

I then used my Beauty blender, dampened it and dabbed it into my Melli Cosmetics Foundation and blended all the highlighting/contouring by dabbing it all over.

Adding Bronzer with Guerlain Terracotta bronzing powder, and added some colour with Benefit Bella Bamba,  setting and buffing with Ben Nye Luxury Banana Powder.

Eyes: Urban Decay eye primer, Ben Nye Essential Eye Shadow and Rouge Palette, A touch of shimmery red in the inner and outer lower lid from BH Cosmetics shimmery palette.  Benefit They’re Real Eyeliner, ELF Waterproof mascara. To really complete the look, I probably should have added false lashes. But hey, it was 11:30pm by this time!

Eyebrows: Anastasia Brow Pomade Dark Brown, and corrector pencil.

Lips: Lime Crime Velveteen Salem.

I felt the lips were a little flat, so I added a little highlighter from Ben Nyes Palette in the middle of my lips.

Better.

Finished result.

This is one trend I will definitely take on. I like me some brown lips, dark and matt, or more of a nude, I like em all.

Did you wear brown lipstick? Is it something you would wear?

(PS. Kim is wearing MAC Midi Mauve at Givenchy. Apparently. I now want that . desperately.)

  1. Oh, I laughed! Yes, I love me a bit of brown lippy too. Won’t be making luscious brown babies just to accessorise, but you have made me feel a WHOLE lot better about the fact I have never been able to give up my brown lippy thang. If you wait long enough, the best things always come back around! Although please, fashion gods, don’t bring back Poppy Matte lippy. That stuff tastes like clag. 😉

    1. That Luscious brown baby is the ULTIMATE accessory Rach!! Yes, I have to admit, i have been wearing brown lippy in one form or the other forever. We are so fashionable Rach!!! x (what does clag taste like?)
