I have worn the same perfume since 1996.
It is my signature – It is what remind people of me.
I make it easy for my family to buy gifts, just add to my collection of scent, body cream, shower gel, scrub, etc etc.
Ok, so I strayed somewhat every once in a while.
I have had my flings with others, but I have always gone back to my favourite. Like warm, comfortable slippers, I feel like I have come home.
“Perfume is like cocktails without the hangover, like chocolate without the calories, like an affair without tears, like a vacation from which you never have to come back.”
― Marian Bendeth
Many years ago, before kids, I worked in, and later managed a perfumery in Sydney CBD. Every day I was embraced by fragrances: I knew all about top notes, layering, aldehydes, and i mixed my week with orientals, florals, woodies and greens. I sort of knew what I liked, but was enthralled with anything new on the market.
Cue: Angel by Thierry Mugler.
The first time I tried it, was when we had an overseas visitor who sprayed it on me with that beautiful, star shaped bottle. Notes of vanilla, patchouli, chocolate, musk, amber, makes this a sweet smelling, extremely long lasting fragrance that you either LOVE or HATE.
I found my signature fragrance.
People always comment when I wear it. They want to know what it is, and when they try it, it never smells the same on them. It is My Scent.
I picked up my Mecca Beauty Loop Box (a gift with iconic samples and testers if you have reached a certain level in spending. Yeah, I know.) and in passing I sprayed a little of a cute little silver hip flask shaped bottle that was winking at me on the shelf: 2 by Comme des Garcons.
And after I walked away, I could not stop sniffing this sexy, warm, amber/patchouli/incense fragrance on my wrist.
“2 by Comme des Garcons” was tempting me, continuously. It was teasing me.
It was delicious, just like Angel, but “2” is decidedly softer, and more mature.
Of course I went back to get it.
I am sorry Angel. I am going to put you in my drawer, just for a little while, but I will be back. Once my flirtation with this dark, sensual scent is over, I will come back and ask you for forgiveness.
“He would be able to create a scent that was not merely human, but super human, an angels scent, so indescribably good and vital that who ever smelt it would be enchanted and with his whole heart would have to love him.”
― Patrick Süskind, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
